The 2-year-old boy calls the British monarch "Gan-Gan," the 34-year-old Duchess of Cambridge said, speaking on the ITV special Our Queen at Ninety. It marked Kate's first TV interview since she and William got engaged in 2010. They wed in 2011. Last year, Kate and William welcomed their second child, Princess Charlotte.
"The Queen, she was really thrilled that it was a little girl, and I think as soon as we came back here to Kensington, she was one of our first visitors here," Kate says in the special, as seen in a sneak peek video posted by the U.K. newspaper The Telegraph.
"She always leaves a little gift or something in their room," the duchess added. "That just shows, I think her love for her family."
In addition to George and Charlotte, the queen and husband Prince Philip, 94, have three other great-grandchildren—Savannah Phillips, 5, and Isla Phillips, 3, the daughters of Elizabeth's daughter Anne's son Peter Phillips, and Mia Tindall, the 2-year-old daughter of Anne's daughter Zara Tindall. William and brother Prince Harry, 31, call the queen "Granny."
In the special, Kate also talked about how the queen has helped her when it comes to her royal engagements.
"She's been very generous and not sort of being forceful at all in any of her views," she added. "I feel she's been sort of a gentle guidance, really, for me."
Our Queen at Ninety will air on ITV in the U.K. on Easter Sunday, March 27. The queen will celebrate her 90th birthday on April 21.
"I said to my mother the other day, I said, 'Do you realize that when you reach 90, I shall have known you for 68 years?' the queen's son and William's father, Prince Charles, 67, says in the special. "She had to laugh a little bit."
