The latest trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse shows Mystique ready to go to war with Apocalypse and the Four Horseman. Professor X helps to prepare the newcomers to harness their powers for good, but as Mystique informs them, "You're not students anymore—you're X-Men."

In an interview with Nerdist.com, director Bryan Singer explained why Apocalypse is "just so different" from any of the X-Men films that have come before it.

"We've always tread this theme of mutants vs. humans," he said. "Apocalypse has two aspects that make him such a different character than I've traditionally explored in the universe. One is that he makes no distinctions between humans and mutants. He's interested in the Earth as a whole and the purity of civilization. And secondly, it deals with ancient mutantism, or the origins of the mutant state, or the origin of gods and religion, which the X-Men [film] universe has never really touched on."

X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters May 27.
