InstagramAvril Lavigne and Chad Kroeger's relationship status seems, well, complicated.
Lavigne, 31, shared a picture of herself and the Nickelback frontman, 41, playing instruments in the recording studio Tuesday night. She did not include an Instagram caption, which led some of her fans to wonder whether they've reunited; others argued that the photo speaks for itself. "Please stay together," one commenter wrote. "You're my last hope on love." Another fan added, "I love you Chavril!" Lavigne wasn't alone with Kroeger, though, as she also spent time in the studio with musicians Zane Carney and Stephan Hovsepian. The singer-songwriter has been busy working on the follow-up to her self-titled fifth studio album, released in late 2013.
A picture is not proof of a romantic reconciliation, of course. When Lavigne announced her separation after two years of marriage in September 2015, the "Complicated" singer shared a wedding photo on Instagram. "It is with heavy heart that Chad and I announce our separation today. Through not only the marriage, but the music as well, we've created many unforgettable moments," she wrote. "We are still, and forever will be, the best of friends, and will always care deeply for each other. To all our family, friends and fans, thank you sincerely for the support."
So, why would fans jump to conclusions?
Lavigne and Kroeger hit the studio together a month after their split, and in December, the "Let Me Go" collaborators were spotted leaving the Sunset Marquis in West Hollywood together. More recently, at Clive Davis' annual pre-Grammys party Feb. 14, the musicians made their first joint red carpet appearance in years. The "Fly" singer took several selfies with Kroeger and shared them on Instagram, captioning one of the photos, "Grammy party, feeling great. Lovely night."
In recent months, neither Lavigne nor Kroeger has publicly addressed their relationship status. The "Sk8er Boi" singer has a history of staying friendly with her exes, as she did with Sum 41's Deryck Whibley, whom she divorced in 2009 after three years of marriage. In fact, after he revealed in May 2014 that he almost died from the effects of alcoholism, she offered her public support. "I am so proud of him," she tweeted at the time. "He is family to me and always will be."
