Nearly a year since she announced her separation from Chris Martin, Gwyneth Paltrow is finally explaining the origins of that infamous phrase.

The former husband and wife, who had just reached their 10 year anniversary, shocked fans when they announced their split on Paltrow's website in late March 2015 with Paltrow filing the divorce papers soon after. However it was the use of a peculiar phrase that caught the world's attention the most.

"We have always conducted our relationship privately, and we hope that as we consciously uncouple and coparent, we will be able to continue in the same manner," the website read. What exactly did it mean to consciously uncouple?

Paltrow admits it wasn't even her own words.

"I unwittingly created a whole sort of hoopla with my choice of words," she told Matt Lauer on Today. "It wasn't my words actually. I was sort of following a theory."

No matter what you call their relationship, Gwyneth knows exactly where Chris stands in her new unmarried life.

"He's like my brother. I'm really close to him," she added. "We're a family. Even though we're not in a romantic relationship, we're a true family and we like to do things to reinforce that we're a family for the children [and] for each other."

Those family ties have been clear and strong since their separation. The entire clan, including daughter Apple and son Moses, celebrated an early Thanksgiving together and then adorably cheered on the musician from the sidelines of Super Bowl 50 a few months later.

"They were thrilled. They were very proud," Paltrow said of her kids' reaction to their dad's performance with Coldplay. "It's pretty incredible. It's also a little weird that your first football game is that, so how do you also counteract that and instill that life is not that all the time?"

When your mom is an Oscar winner and your dad is an international rock star, life might not get much more normal than that. Still, Paltrow admitted the entire family reacted to the break up like any other regular family would.

"It was a very intense time for our family. Emotions were very high and deep and all over the place," she described. "I just try to keep to myself as much as possible."

In fact, the legendary actress revealed that she's planning on staying off the silver screen for the time being to focus on her entrepreneurial endeavor, the lifestyle website and organic skincare brand, Goop.

"I'll return to acting probably, but probably not right now."
