Can something be nostalgic if it's new?
The Tonight Show debuted a new introductory theme song Thursday night just in time for—you guessed it—TGIF! Even though ABC's signature programming lineup no longer exists, Jimmy Fallon teamed up with Jesse Frederick (who performed theme songs for Family Matters, Full House and Step by Step) to receive his very own '90s-style intro.
If we didn't know any better, we would think The Tonight Show was a sitcom straight out of that era. The show's update features is a combination of all three former hit series, including all of the cast members participating in activities only to stop and smile for the camera—say cheese!
But it's the outfits that are the real winners in this intro. Fallon runs down the stairs like he's part of Full House in a beige, red and blue color-blocked button down and khakis while Ferguson launches into the cheesy theme.
"When the night has fallen and the day is done / Your soul is aching for that special someone," Ferguson sings.
The rest of the video features everyone from The Tonight Show, including the late-night show's announcer Steve Higgins and The Roots. Amir "Questlove" Thompson is at his drums, but to make it as corny as ever, the video shows him playing with one drumstick and a spatula—d'oh!
Tarik Trotter plays the role of the jock, who catches a football by his front door as Ferguson sings, "Let the light shine through." You really can't get more inspirational than that. While it's all family fun for a while, the updated theme does include some inappropriate references when Frank Knuckles and Mark Kelley are seen reading magazines. Knuckles' publication is Cat Fancy while Kelly is catching up on Bong Fancy.
They all come together in the final scene when they try to squish onto the couch.
Watch the clip above and prepare to feel like re-watching all your favorite '90s shows...when you're done bingeing House of Cards, obviously.
