The Spotlight star is nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award—and we must say, her new platinum 'do would look quite lovely next to a golden statue.
This is far from the first time Rachel has been blond, but it is her first Oscar nomination. In Spotlight, the actress plays Sacha Pfeiffer, a reporter for The Boston Globe's Spotlight team during their investigation into the Catholic Church clergy's sex-abuse scandal. In preparation to play the journalist, one of the journalists who really did uncover the scandal in the Catholic Archdiocese of Boston, Rachel told Today's Savannah Guthrie she really did "stalk" Sacha offscreen!
"I stalked her online," she said with a laugh. "It was great, too, because Sacha was doing Boston Radio at the time, so even when I was getting ready, brushing my teeth or whatever, I could just listen to her interview from the day and get her voice in my head—I know that's probably really creepy for you [Sacha]!"
"[There's] a pressure to get someone's story right," she continued, "and to be as authentic as possible and as honest as possible, especially when it's based on the truth."
She did her due diligence for the role, too. No detail was too small for Rachel, either. "Our first phone call was an hour-and-a-half, but then it was walks and dinners and constant text messages and emails to ask questions," Sacha said on Today. "It was everything from what I wore to the color of my bag to what I thought to did I cook dinner with my husband..."
"It was amazing to watch her do that much research," said Sacha, noting that the star inquired about everything "from the physical to the philosophical."
Clearly, all that had work paid off! Not only is Rachel up for an Academy Award for her role in Spotlight, but her co-star Mark Ruffalo is also up for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. Spotlight also scored nods in Directing, Film Editing, Bed Picture and Writing (Original Screenplay) categories.
