The Simpsons, Homer Simpson

Fox

Live from Springfield, it's The Simpsons?! Fox is taking the animated comedy live for the first time ever. Yes, after 27 seasons, Homer Simpson will appear live in an all-new episode of The Simpsons on Sunday, May 15 at 8 p.m.

Say what?

In a release, Fox said Marge, Lisa and Bart will turn the show over to Homer who will "take a break from stuffing his face to comment on the events of the day." The Simpsons will be live for the last three minutes of the show on both the East Coast and West Coast broadcasts.

Beginning Sunday, May 1 until Wednesday, May 4, fans can tweet questions using the #HomeLive tag. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Al Jean said the show will use motion capture technology to make the animated scene.

Going live isn't anything new for shows, but it is especially odd for an animated show to do it. NBC recently did all of this season of Undateable live. In the past, Will & Grace, 30 Rock, ER, The Daily Show, One Life to Live and more shows have done live broadcasts as ratings stunts.

Oh, and don't fret, the long-running comedy has already been renewed for season 28.

The Simpsons airs Sundays, 8 p.m. on Fox.
