Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images for NARASLittle Big Town just took to the stage at the 2016 Grammy Awards for a performance of "Girl Crush" that presenter Ryan Seacrest promised wasn't like any way we'd seen or heard it before. And he wasn't wrong.
Karen Fairchild, lead vocalist on the track, absolutely owned the stage on a stripped-down version of their hit, which had already earned two Grammys for Best Country Song and Best Country Duo/Group Performance before the group even hit the stage to perform. Surrounded by a string orchestra, the quartet delivered a stirring performance that even earned them a standing ovation from the likes of Bruno Mars. Not too shabby!
While speaking with Giuliana Rancic on the red carpet before making their way in to the big event, vocalist Kimberly Schlapman admitted that performing wasn't didn't exactly take their mind off the nerves over being nominated for two further awards (Best Country Album for Pain Killer and Song of the Year for "Girl Crush." Sadly, they won neither.). "I wouldn't say it distracts from it at all," she admitted. "I'd say it adds to the nerves and the excitement. This is our first time to perform on the Grammys, though. We're so thrilled."
When Ryan asked about the song's enduring appeal, Fairchild explained: "Everybody's been rejected and we've all been jealous. It's a relatable story and it's written in such a provocative way. I think people just connected to it, you know?"
"It's an emotion that I think everybody's felt at one point or another. And that's the beauty of music," group member Jimi Westbrook continued.
