Watch: Teresa Giudice Shares Gritty Details of Prison Life

Spending nearly one year in prison was a huge wake-up call for Teresa Giudice, to put it mildly.

The Real Housewives of New Jersey star had to quickly learn the ins and outs of life behind bars at the Danbury Correctional Facility after she began her sentence in January of 2015.

For starters? The mother of four had no idea that you still need legal tender to purchase goods while serving out her time.

"I thought when you go to prison you didn't need any money," the author of Turning the Tables: From Housewife to Inmate and Back Again told E! News' Catt Sadler in an exclusive sit-down.

"Hello! You need money when you're in prison. You need money unfortunately. Your family members send it in. You're allowed to spend $180 every two weeks."

Teresa shared how she would use the funds to purchase "shampoo, conditioner, rice cakes, peanut butter, tuna" and other personal items.

The outspoken reality television star also spilled on some of the grittier details about life away from her family and the comforts of her New Jersey mansion.

According to her, maxi pads were one of the facility's hottest commodities.

"I used it to remove my makeup…A lot of girls used it to wash the floor, they used it as shower shoes, they used it to make sex toys." Um, what?

"Yeah, with rubber gloves and a toothbrush in the middle of it. I haven't used a maxi pad since I've been home."

Teresa had one final note about the subject at hand, that she won't be using a maxi pad "anytime soon."
