National Pizza Day

Let us all take a moment to recognize one of our favorite cheesy indulgences. Pizza is there for you after a late night; it's a leftover breakfast food. It's the ideal birthday party for kids (and adults), too.

The universal synonym for "celebration" in our culture is "pizza party," right?

It is one of the foods that is pretty much beloved by all, which is why it is featured prominently in so many TV shows and films. Note to any script writers: if you want to make a scene better, just add a cheesy, delicious slice of pizza somewhere and boom! Oscar-winning moment.

Today we honor the iconic food that has brought us so much joy with a look at the most important pizza moments in pop culture:

1. Home Alone 2

20th Century Fox

Pizza plays a major role in both Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.

It's essentially what gets the ball rolling on this little boy being left alone to begin with.

Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) is a typical kid. He just wants some cheese pizza when his family orders several pies for dinner. His older bully brother says there isn't anything left and mocks him.

So, Kevin gets in a fight, sent to the attic, and left behind by his family, who goes on a Christmas vacation. Inevitably he indulges in pizza in both films, because that's what you do when you treat yourself.

Since the first Home Alone is set in the Chicago area, and the sequel is set in New York, he even gets the best of both iconic pizza cities.

Eating pizza in the back of a limo is #GOALS.

2. Breaking Bad

On season three of AMC's Breaking Bad, Walter White (Bryan Cranston) arrives home with his son and an extra-large pizza, for a family dinner, but his wife won't let him in the house.

He takes his frustration out on the pizza (it's terrible, we know) by flinging that beautiful pie onto the roof, before angrily leaving.

Of all the drama and heartbreak on this Emmy-winning series, a wasted pizza may be the show's most tragic moment.

3. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Why are the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles among our favorite crime-fighting superheroes?

Because they're obsessed with pizza.

Whether they're animated or live-action, in every reboot and iteration of their story, this is one of the turtle canons that always remains true.

It turns out delivery drivers are willing to drop off a pie to a sewer grate. Who knew?

4. Spaceballs

MGM

Pizza was an actual character in the Mel Brooks' comedy Spaceballs.

The villainous gangster Pizza the Hutt (Dom DeLuise) is like Star Wars' Jabba the Hutt, but edible, as he suffers an untimely demise after eating himself to death in a limo.

But wow, what a way to go.

5. Saturday Night Fever

Paramount Pictures

It was John Travolta's character in Saturday Night Fever who taught us the most monstrous way to down a couple slices on the go.

You can tell by the way Tony Manero stacks his slices that he's a pretty cool guy.

Travolta may be fly when he's at the disco, or whatever, but it is his badass pizza strut through Brooklyn that is his most badass move in the movie.

6. Eat Pray Love

There may have been three facets to Eat Pray Love, but it was Elizabeth Gilbert's (Julia Roberts) love to eat that struck us the most.

Girl gets into some iconic pizza from Naples, Italy while she's discovering herself and learns as well that, hey... pizza is always worth it.

Julia Roberts also starred in the film Mystic Pizza, so can we basically count the Oscar winner's career success as being possible because of pizza, right?

Either way, we respect how the star makes her movie choices. Because carbs.
