Press Line Photos / Splash NewsColdplay will take center stage during the Super Bowl halftime show in just a few days, but Chris Martin and the band are getting us excited ahead of time with some inside details about what to expect.
During a press conference on Thursday, they explained that their inspiration for the big performance came from one of their most beloved music festivals.
"One of our favorite places to play in the world is a place called Glastonbury festival, which is a big music festival that happens in England," Martin explained to a reporter. "It's full of color and pageantry, and it's an amazing sort of spiritual home of music in England."
He continued, "We wanted to bring that sort of vibe to the Super Bowl halftime show. We can't compete with amazing dance routines and all of that. We have to try to do what comes naturally to us, which is to try and provide a bit of fun and a great atmosphere for people to come and be together and be communal and enjoy the general experience."
A little help from Beyonce definitely won't hurt either! In fact, Martin explained to another reporter how they got the Queen to join them for the big game.
"I said 'Hey Queen Bey! I want you in a red bodysuit!' " He joked, before adding, "Because it's Super Bowl 50!"
He then explained how the NFL came to them and asked them to play the milestone performance by including the past, present and future.
"So the way we've done that is to look to the future is by asking these kids from the YOLA, Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles, and the way we're honoring the past is by asking some of the people whose halftime shows we really loved. And Beyonce's, of course, is right up there. I think most people would agree."
Martin also hinted that a second person from a previous halftime show would also be joining them. Though he didn't say who, he did mention that "Uptown Funk" has been his favorite song this week, and we can't help but wonder if we might end up seeing Bruno Mars?! One can only hope…
Speaking of previous years' performances, E! News' own Baker Machado asked if the group had any plans for a "left shark moment," referencing the viral moment from Katy Perry's show last year.
"When we bring our sharks out, we've trained them so well. We have left shark, middle shark… a pepsi logo flash on screen," Martin laughed, joking, "You're like asking which part of our show we'll f--k up terribly!"
But he also clarified: "The left shark was wonderful!" (What other praise could a shark possible need?!)
The 2016 Super Bowl will air this Sunday on CBS at 3:30 p.m. PST.
