Drew Barrymore may be on fire in our eyes—quite literally, actually—as we gaze upon her cover story in the March 2016 issue of Harper's Bazaar, but the mother-of-two says she doesn't think she's all that hot right now.
Playing off one of her very first films, 1984's Firestarter, the actress opens up to the publication about what it means to be "hot in Hollywood," and why it's okay that she's just not there at the moment.
"Hot is a state of mind. It's an energy," she explains. "You're hot when you're motivated. It means you want it and you're going after it."
She explains further, "Hot isn't about being on the A-list of having a hot body. It's literally people who are on fire. Like Lena Dunham is on fire. Amy Schumer. Louis C.K. I think their brands of comedy and observational life stuff are some of the coolest I've seen in so many years."
We definitely feel her on that one! But why doesn't she categorize herself with this group of "hot" people?
"I don't think I'm hot right now necessarily, because I have all my irons in a bunch of different fires," she admits. "I'm writing. I'm doing makeup. I'm doing design. I'm expanding Flower into different categories."
However, she doesn't think it's necessarily a bad thing that her candle has gone out (so to speak) for the time being. "I think it's a huge mistake to think you have to burn bright for your whole life," she says. "You cannot sustain it. It's exhausting, and it's not very realistic."
And speaking of being exhausted, Barrymore says there were definitely times in her life in which she was living in the heat of the moment with her career and forgoing important things, like her health and her sleep.
"It's been at different intervals: E.T. was a really exciting time; when I was doing The Wedding Singer and starting Flower Films; making Never Been Kissed and Charlie's Angels," she explains. "When I directed Whip It and did Grey Gardens in the same year. Those were times when I really pushed myself and I didn't care about my sleep, my health. I didn't have relationships or children that would be a priority over my work."
Now, with two children, Olive and Frankie, and a husband of three years, Will Kopelman, things are a bit different...but no matter what she says, Barrymore will always be hot in our eyes!
