American Girl dolls are making the jump from the shelf in your childhood bedroom to the small screen.

Amazon has announced plans to produce four live-action specials based on Mattel's popular line of dolls and books, with the option to develop a series as well. The first American Girl special will premiere on Amazon Prime Streaming in the US, UK, Germany, and Austria later this year.

Two of the specials will center on characters from American Girl's BeForever franchise of historically-inspired girls, with a third focusing on characters from the contemporary Girl of the Year franchise.

"American Girl resonates strongly with kids and parents alike through its message of self-confidence, adventure, exploration and learning," Amazon Studios' kids programming chief Tara Sorensen said in a statement . "Their research dives deep and adds rich layers to the IP that are unparalleled in this space which, in turn, will facilitate a truly enriched on-screen experience."

This won't be American Girl's first foray into live-action programming, however. Since 2004, the company has produced a series of direct-to-video movies with the notable exception of 2008's Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, which starred Abigail Breslin in the title role and was released theatrically.
