While the Internet nearly broke after it was announced that five of the six Friends stars would be reuniting for an NBC special honoring James Burrows, with Matthew Perry sitting out, fans shouldn't expect the real-life reunion to lead to an on-screen one.
At the 2016 Winter TCA Press Tour to promote her Netflix series Grace and Frankie, Friends co-creator Marta Kauffman crushed any hopes of a big-screen team-up for the iconic group.
"There will never be a Friends reunion movie," she said. (Kauffman has said this before, telling E! News, "Friends was about that time in your life when your friends are your family and once you have a family, there's no need anymore.")
But wait, how did the topic of Friends come up during a panel for Grace and Frankie (which return for its second season in May)?!
Well, Kauffman was asked about the possibility of a 9 to 5 reunion on the series with its stars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin and their former co-star Dolly Parton.
And it seems like Kauffman is not a fan of on-screen reunions. "Season two is not the right time, spoiler alert. But here's the deal. We're still, I feel, creating a world. And the world is Grace and Frankie," she explained. "The minute you bring Dolly in, whom I love by the way, it's 9 to 5. No matter what you do, the thought is it's a 9 to 5 reunion, and you're taken out of the show."
Still, it sounds like it will happen if Fonda and Tomlin have their way, as they've already come up with an idea to bring Parton on. And Kauffman is open to it, saying, "It's a good idea, we're just not ready," before adding, "I will not say never on Dolly Parton."
