"It's been a long time. Do you think they're still upset with me?"

That's quite a question coming from Charlotte/A, who terrorized the Liars and their friends and families for years or months or however much time went by in the first five and a half seasons of this show.

Unfortunately, she didn't get much of a chance to find out, or to make any amends, since she didn't survive the episode, which was a twist we definitely did not see coming.

Turns out Charlotte was the reason that all of the girls headed back to Rosewood after five years, because the state of Pennsylvania (with help from Ali) has called them back to give their opinion on whether Charlotte should be released from the hospital.

While Alison managed to convince most of the girls to lie about their feelings toward Charlotte, Aria just couldn't do it. Instead, she broke down and told a heartbreaking story about being driven to tears when the power in a subway car went out. Mona, on the other hand, asked for Charlotte to be released, since she understands what it's like to have been locked up in Radley once upon a time. In the end, Charlotte got out regardless of what Aria said, and none of the girls were happy about it.

Apparently Charlotte wasn't happy either, because she committed suicide less than a day after being released, which is what she tried to do before she was locked up a whole five years ago. Or at least it looked like she committed suicide. An autopsy actually revealed that she was dead before she was thrown from the bell tower, so once again, there's a murderer loose in Rosewood, and all of the liars are suspects.

Charlotte's funeral (held in the same church whose bell tower she was thrown from, which seems weird) was the spitting image of Ali's funeral so many years ago, with Sara Harvey standing in for Jenna and the girls watching from the sidewalk in shock. This time, however, there were no "A" text messages. Instead, there was just someone watching creepily from a limousine.

All things considered, tonight's return was really bittersweet. Hanna's engaged to someone who's not Caleb, and Toby's building a house for (presumably) a girl who is not Spencer. Emily's addicted to pills, and Ezra's girlfriend Nicole is missing and probably dead after being kidnapped in South America. Nothing's going well for anyone, and now they're all suspects in a murder investigation. Basically, it's just another season of Pretty Little Liars, except now everyone can legally drink, so it's an even better season of Pretty Little Liars, and we can't wait to see more.

Pretty Little Liars airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on Freeform.
