Caitlyn Jenner is hitting the campaign trail.

Not for any presidential hopefuls, but for Oscar contenders.

The I Am Cait star was on hand last night at a Los Angeles screening of Tangerine, an indie film about two transgender sex workers (Kiki Kitana Rodriguez and Mya Taylor) on Christmas Eve in Hollywood.

"The movie was so educational for me," Jenner said. "It was funny. It had a lot of humor but it was so brutally honest. I learned so much."

The film, which was shot on an iPhone by director Sean Baker and produced by brothers Mark Duplass and Jay Duplass, is up for four Independent Spirit Awards. Producers are also hoping to snag Oscar nominations.

"Over the last night nine months that I've been out, I've learned so much about this community," Jenner said. "I was totally isolated. I obviously couldn't out myself for so many years. Than I got to a point in my life where I really felt I had to live my life authentic and who I was and maybe in doing that I could make a difference."

Jenner praised the movie as an "inside look at the difficulties and the obstacles of trans women of color are facing."

"You know, these are really big issues in our community," she said. "Jobs, healthcare—all of these issues and with something like this, you really get to see what's going on. We need to do a lot of work. We need to do a lot of acceptance and stories like this are just nothing but good for the entire community. It really kind of humanizes the experience."

Taylor thanked Jenner for her support.

"I want to think Caitlyn for being a wonderful trans role model," she said. "A lot of people don't understand what it's like to be a trans person or why we decide to be our authentic self. Caitlyn went public with her story. She's put it out there so more people could understand."

Tangerine is available now on Blu-ray, DVD and VOD.
