As the year winds down and new outlets continue to look back at key events in 2015, Kathie Lee Gifford took a moment on Wednesday's episode of the Today show, to remember a heartbreaking one: The death of her husband, Frank Gifford.

The sportscaster, NFL Hall of Famer and New York Giants star died on Aug. 9 at age 84. On Wednesday's Today show, Kathie Lee's co-host Hoda Kotb, 51, called him a "truly special man."

The Today episode featured heartwarming footage of Frank and Kathie Lee , 62, together on the show, as well as segments showing her speaking fondly of him.

"He was so grateful," she said, tearfully. "He knew what hard work was. He never had an entitled moment in his life and we will miss him, so much."

Frank and Kathie Lee married in 1986 and share two children—son Cody, 25, and daughter Cassidy, 22.

"I prayed that the Lord would take him the way he wanted to go," Kathie Lee said. "And so I thank the Lord for that, for his grace to us as a family, and I pray his grace on all of you as well."

She told E! News' Marc Malkin earlier this month she is happy her husband is in Heaven.

"Every day I start my day with my lord Jesus Christ," she said. "It's the way I live every day and I end it. My husband is with him, and I know that with all my heart. People don't understand that you can rejoice and grieve at the same time. I rejoice that my husband is there in a beautiful place and I miss him."
