Move over, Jurassic World. There's a new leader in town.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens' debut weekend has broken several box office records and officially has set a new all-time domestic debut record with an estimated $238 million. Walt Disney Studios announced that J.J. Abrams' new installment also made an international debut of $279 million, which brings the total grosses to $517 million.
In addition to smashing these records, Star Wars: The Force Awakens also has been named the biggest December opening and the first movie to post a single day over $100 million. It's safe to say the Star Wars-obsessed and many, many others all turned out to see John Boyega and Daisy Ridley take on intergalactic enemies.
The record-breaking numbers don't really come as a surprise, though, because pretty much the entire world, including Hollywood, was geeking out ahead of the movie's release. Some stars showed up to the Los Angeles premiere dressed as different characters, while others turned to social media to participate in the pop culture obsession.
Even James Bond AKA Daniel Craig got in the Star Wars mood—small spoilers ahead!—by making a cameo.
As E! News previously reported, Star Wars: Episode VIII is already in the works, but won't be directed by Abrams. Although he's staying on as a producer, Abrams passed the torch to Rian Johnson, who directed Looper and some episodes of Breaking Bad. The script is complete and filming already has begun, but the cast expects there will be rewrites just like any other movie.
Abrams added that Johnson "has asked for a couple of things here and there that he needs for his story. He is an incredibly accomplished filmmaker and an incredibly strong writer. So the story he told took what we were doing and went in the direction that he felt was best but that is very much in line with what we were thinking as well...He's going to do it in the way he sees fit. He's neither asking for nor does he need me to oversee the process."
Based on the record-breaking numbers, it's safe to say everyone loved Star Wars: The Force Awakens, so we'll just have to wait and see how Star Wars: Episode VIII performs.
