Steve Carell loves losers. The Office star and Oscar nominee for his role in Foxcatcher says he's drawn to certain characters with the qualities we'd label as "losers."

"I think of them as human," Carell told Inside the Actors Studio host James Lipton. "My heart goes out to people who aren't necessarily in the mainstream…I find that really interesting."

Carell, who can next be seen on the big screen in The Big Short, went on to discuss his beloved Office character, Michael Scott. The heart of The Office, Carell's paper company boss left the show after season seven, but returned for the series finale (and made you cry, it's OK to admit that).

"Michael Scott is somebody who just wants to be loved, really, and maybe that's the thread. I think it's people who just want to be loved," he says in the exclusive clip above.

Pause for a moment and register that he still talks about Michael Scott in the present tense.

Steve Carell's Inside the Actors Studio airs Thursday, Dec. 17 at 8 p.m. ET on Bravo.

(E! and Bravo are both part of the NBCUniversal family.)
