While some actors and actresses had a shocking morning in Hollywood, others may have just turned down the shades and went back to bed.
During the Thursday morning announcement, America Ferrera, Chloë Grace Moretz, Angela Basset and Dennis Quaid took the stage to announce the nominees for the 2016 Golden Globes—and boy, did they turn our expectations on their heads.
After nominations for the 2016 SAG Awards were announced a day earlier, we developed some initial ideas of how this coming awards season might look, but as is typical of Hollywood awards shows, our assumptions were quickly shattered.
One of the most predominant surprises was the Best Supporting Actor nomination for Sylvester Stallone for his return as the iconic "Italian stallion" Rocky Balboa in Creed. After the 69-year-old was completely forgotten by the Screen Actors Guild for his portrayal of the aging boxer, it was a welcomed shock to hear his name called in the Golden Globe pool.
However, his co-star Michael B. Jordan and the film overall were both again snubbed for nominations, despite the serious physical transformation (holy muscles!) the Hollywood newcomer displayed throughout the fan favorite.
Similarly, Jennifer Lawrence was shut out of the Screen Actors Guild Awards for her role as Joy Mangano in Joy, but the two-time winner was honored with a Golden Globe nomination for the fourth time today.
To top off the surprise, the film, written and directed by American Hustle's David O. Russell, also joyously received a Best Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical nomination.
At this point, it's no surprise Brie Larson received her first Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama for her emotionally harrowing role as Ma in the thriller Room.
To fans' despair, however, her adorable sidekick, Jacob Tremblay, who plays her son throughout the film, was completely shut out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association after receiving surprise recognition from the Screen Actors Guild.
Funny woman Melissa McCarthy celebrated her first Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress for the action comedy Spy, a surprise considering the film premiered months ago in June. Still, her performance clearly could not be forgotten by the Hollywood Foreign Press—neither could the film itself, which was also nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy.
We're particularly excited to see who comes out on top in McCarthy's category, especially since she is up against Lawrence and Trainwreck's Amy Schumer, who won a Primetime Emmy this year.
Suffragette was another notable major snub, considering it opened to favorable reviews and featured critically acclaimed actresses including Meryl Streep, Carey Mulligan and Helena Bonham Carter. Still, the names nor the subject matter—the film explored women's battle for the right to vote at the turn of the century—were not enough to earn a single nomination.
Despite Best Motion Picture, Best Screenplay and Best Director nominations, Spotlight's award-winning ensemble cast—including Michael Keaton and Mark Ruffalo—was shut out of every category, particularly Rachel McAdams who earned a SAG Award nomination just a day ago.
While its SAG Award nomination gave us hope that it had not been forgotten, Straight Outta Compton was indeed left out of every category and we fear this may be a trend to come this awards season.
In happier news, both Will Smith and Matt Damon got surprise recognition for their roles in Concussion and The Martian, respectively. Though, both are up against extreme competition—Smith will be facing off against The Danish Girl's Eddie Redmayne and The Revenant's Leonardo DiCaprio, while Damon is up against The Big Short's Steve Carrell and Christian Bale.
