MarvelDid Iron Man spill the beans about Spider-Man?
The web-slinging superhero is featured in Marvel's 2006 Civil War superhero crossover comic series. Many fans speculated that Spidey could make an appearance in the Disney-owned company's upcoming movie Captain America: Civil War after the Disney-owned company acquired the rights earlier this year to use the character in its cinematic universe. In a new interview with EW.com, Downey appears to offer the strongest hint of this. Marvel has not commented.
"Cheadle and I are just going, 'Wow, dude, look at this,'" Robert Downey Jr. who reprises his role as Iron Man in Captain America: Civil War, told EW.com in comments posted on Thursday, referring to co-star Don Cheadle.
"We're now like the old guard, and our storyline carries real weight just because of our history in the [canon]," Downey said. "But we're also looking around like, 'Who thought that Falcon and Black Panther and Ant-Man and now Spider-Man…?' I mean it's like wow, this thing is just crazy."
EW.com also reported that during a visit to the set of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, a "particularly large battle" sequence was shot, during which "a stuntman wearing a very familiar red and blue suit that covered him from head to toe" was spotted standing off to the side.
"Listen, if there was a cosplayer running around that set when you were there, I don't know what to tell you," the outlet quoted Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige as saying.
Captain America: Civil War is set for release on May 6, 2016. Chris Evans plays Captain America for the third time. Downey's participation as Iron Man marks the first time the actor will appear in a Marvel film that isn't an Iron Man or The Avengers movie. Iron Man and other Marvel superheroes have occasionally been featured with Spider-Man in comic books and cartoons.
The movie rights over Spider-Man were for years licensed to Sony Pictures Entertainment. In February, company struck a deal with Marvel under which the character would for the first time appear in a film from Marvel's Cinematic Universe. Marvel had also announced both firms are "also exploring opportunities to integrate characters from the MCU into future Spider-Man films."
About four months later, Marvel and Sony announced Tom Holland, now 19, would play Spider-Man in a new standalone film Spider-Man, which is set for release on July 28, 2017.
After a 2014 cyber attack on Sony Pictures Entertainment, company emails were leaked and in one of them, its motion picture chief reportedly told a business partner Marvel and Sony wanted to feature Spider-Man in the third Captain America movie, The Wall Street Journal had reported.
