Prepare to work up a (sartorial) appetite.
Over the course of fashion weeks, we've seen plenty wacky pop-culture-meets-fashion looks on the runway—Kermit the Frog jackets and eggs and bacon frocks are the examples that come to mind—and now, McDonald's couture is having a moment. Actually, make that McDCouture—the official title of the 20-look collection created by students at Miami International University of Art & Design that recently showed at Miami Beach Funksion Fashion Week.
From far away, the fast food-inspired line bares unmistakable McDonald's motifs, with ample golden arches and the restaurant giant's red and yellow color scheme. But look closely, and more careful examination reveals that each and every look is actually crafted from McDonald's wrappers, happy meal containers, monogrammed cups, straw, etc. Meanwhile, the creatives over at Project Runway are kicking themselves for not using this theme for an upcoming season's unconventional challenge.
Whilst feasting our eyes on the mouthwatering spread, we picked out a few highlights from the collection: wrapper-embellished crop tops, skirts crafted from McCafe cups, fluted collars made from straws, Happy Meal tote bags and—as the pièce de résistance—a full fledge wedding gown made from crinkled wrappers, complete with a French fry container bouquet.
We're not sure we ever anticipated Hamburglar-chic making its way into couture, but hey—we're lovin' the super-sized creativity here.
