Just days before releasing their upcoming fifth album, Made In the A.M., One Direction dropped a new song Friday that serves as a bit of a farewell to their fans.

The hand-clapping, sing-along song "History" pays tribute to the band's incredible success over the last five years that they could not have possibly achieved without the support of their fans.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Liam Payne describes the new tune as a "modern version" of "You've Got a Friend in Me."  He explains, "More than anything, the song is about the way the fans and everyone have created this massive thing—One Direction—over the past five years."

With lyrics like, "You and me, we got a whole lot of history / We could be the greatest thing the world has ever seen" and "So don't let it go / We can make some more / We can live forever," Payne hits the nail on the head with his description of the song.

"Out of [‘History'] comes a little bit of closure," he adds.

As we reported in August, the band from across the pond is planning to take a hiatus after releasing Made in the A.M., so the song will definitely pull at some heartstrings for their diehard fans.

Speaking of those fans, the chorus of the song pays even more tribute to them as Niall Horan and frequent 1D collaborator Julian Bunetta brought several of them into the studio to record the chorus of "History" together (something Payne swears was actually his idea).

"It's really great because obviously that song is mainly about the fans and what they've done," Payne notes. "I think it was important that they were a part of it, to close the album."
