It comes as a surprise to many that Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez are divorcing.

Then again, the fact they ever got married in the first place was shocking, too, when you consider Berry's previous stance on "I do's."

During a 2007 interview with InStyle, the Oscar winner vowed, "I will never, never get married again," following her failed marriages to baseball star David Justice and singer Eric Benét.

But sometime before January 2012 (when Berry, now 49, and Martinez, also 49, got engaged), Berry had a change of a heart. "It's another one of those never-say-never things," she told InStyle. "I'm a hopeless romantic, and I won't stop till I get it right!"

At the time, Berry told the mag how well she and Martinez complimented each other. "He's silly, a clown and very much the life of the party, which is good for someone like me," she said. "Danny Downer...been there, done that. Now I like Louie Lightfoot!"

Martinez was a bit more tight-lipped about his love for Berry. In March 2012, however, he did confirm the engagement rumor, telling Miami.com, "Yes, of course it's true."

Just over a year into their PDA-filled engagement, the couple confirmed they were expecting a baby boy. Berry, who has a 7-year-old daughter Nahla from her previous relationship with model Gabriel Aubry, later told CNN her second pregnancy was "the biggest surprise of my life," but a welcome one. "I thought I was kind of past the point where this could be a reality for me," she said. "So it's been a big surprise and the most wonderful."

In July 2013, the expectant parents tied the knot in France, and just three months later, they welcomed son Maceo. The whole family was overjoyed by their new addition—including Nahla, who "prayed and prayed [for a younger sibling] for like a year and a half," mom later revealed on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Having a newborn didn't seem to put a damper on any grownup activities, though—Berry invested in a lingerie line and personally stepped up her intimate-wear game, too! She was interested in lingerie before, too, she told DeGeneres, adding that, "being married to a French man, you kind of have to be."

There were the occasional rumors of trouble in paradise—made worse when Berry lost her wedding ring on a trip to Mexico—but these never amounted to anything. Sources close to Maceo's parents were quick to shoot down these reports.

Berry actually seemed very happily settled into married, family life. In July 2014, actually, she revealed daughter Nahla's "Top Ten Ways to Stay Married" on the Late Show With David Letterman.

And while Martinez, again, isn't quite as forthcoming about his personal life, he hinted at wanting more children with Berry someday. In May 2015, the actor joked to KTLA Morning News he didn't want "20 more [babies]—11 would be enough!"

There seemed to be no love lost leading up to Berry and Martinez's second wedding anniversary this past July, either. "Thank you for reminding me," Berry joked to E! News of the then-impending milestone. "I gotta get something fast."

"Wow, two years," she added reflectively. "That's big for me."
