Celebrity Halloween Costumes Done Right: When Cleverness Outshines Cleavage

It might be impossible to top Katy Perry as a Cheeto

Halloween is upon us, which means the next 24 hours will be filled with costumes and the think pieces about them—scary stuff.

Of course, it's a tired cliché at this point to complain about what other people are wearing (or not wearing). It's obviously best not to wear anything overtly offensive (i.e., don't lose your job over a crass costume), but otherwise, to each his or her own!

Celebrities are a mixed bag this time of year—some go for sexy, some go for silly, and some go for something blah in the middle. Then there's the occasional star whose costume is so creative that its cleverness outdoes anything cleavage could ever accomplish. Case in point? Katy Perry the Flamin' Hot Cheeto.

Now this is a lady with some enviable assets, but she happily, humbly and hilariously hid her famous curves beneath a lumpy, cumbersome-looking ensemble so she could truly resemble this beloved snack food.

Another gal who has been willing to downplay her looks for a laugh is Mindy Kaling, who rather hilariously dressed up as Captain Hook for a Jimmy Kimmel Live! Halloween special. That mustache alone deserves respect, but it's the pilgrim-esque sock-and-shoe combination that really won us over.

Let's not forget about the fellas with some serious Halloween game, too—like Channing Tatum! The Magic Mike XXL star could easily go shirtless, throw on a bow tie and be everyone's favorite stripper (and no one would complain). But when it came time to attend a family carnival with wife Jenna Dewan-Tatum and their 2-year-old daughter Everly, Chan traded in his abs for a bear belly and adorably transformed into Winnie the Pooh.

Then there was former Suite Life of Zack and Cody star Cole Sprouse, whose Milo Thatch costume tugged at heartstrings everywhere. The actor's portrayal of the Atlantis: The Lost Empire character was spot-on, absolutely, and it was also pretty freaking adorable.

Also stinking cute and at least a little bit creative? Taylor Swift the "Pegacorn" (aka a unicorn with wings). We mostly just appreciate the fact that T-Swift wore a onesie to media interviews all over New York City looking like a Lisa Frank stuffed animal—very 1989, indeed.

Miranda Lambert took a historical approach to Halloween with her feminist "Yes We Can" costume, which she proudly wore after publicly calling out Chris Brown on multiple occasions.

Then there was Iggy Azalea, who addressed a feud head-on with her Halloween costume. Just a few weeks after Snoop Dogg compared the Aussie rapper to Marlon Wayans' character in the 2004 movie White Chicks, Iggy had some fun with the insult.

We've got to give props to the celeb whose Halloween costume was clever and had cleavage: Colton Haynes! Who knew Ursula could be such a babe?

Happy Halloween, everyone.
