Taking a classic cartoon and turning it into a live-action film will always be risky, but the stars of Jem and the Holograms feel confident that their upcoming movie will serve a major purpose!

E! News sat down with the actresses—Aubrey Peeples, Hayley Kiyoko, Aurora Peerineau and Stefanie Scott—to chat about the movie and the impact it will have in today's society.

After admitting they had to Google and watch a few episodes of the original 1980s TV series before they realized what it was, the ladies can all safely say the message in the film is relatable for all generations.

"I think we had a really great time just working together and just being a part of the Jem following, [which] is massive," Kiyoko, who plays Aja, explains. "This film caters towards those fans but also more so really focuses on creating a new generation of Jem lovers."

She continues, "It's cool to be a part of something that has a positive impact, hopefully, and inspires young girls because you know, growing up as women, self-confidence is a big issue."

Jem follows the story of a girl who gets famous when her video goes viral on the Internet, and while the actresses admit they aren't the greatest on social media, they know it's a means for younger generations to express themselves.

"That's what the whole thing is about: how to use social media," Peeples, the leading lady who plays Jem in the film, reveals. "The reason we introduced that theme is because it's so relevant, but also the original Jem series is all about self-expression and finding out who you are. And now a days that's done mostly driven by the internet. That's how we bring those old messages to the new generation."

Jem and the Holograms hits theaters on Oct. 23.

(E! And Universal Pictures are both members of the NBCUniversal family.)
