Allow us to explain why a high-necked silhouette is a welcome fashion departure as we head into cooler weather.

The turtleneck comes in all shapes and sizes and what we love most about the modern-but-retro style is its ability to cover up and look sexy all at once. By hiding the neckline area you are covering one of the most feminine parts of the body, which ironically draws more attention your way (who doesn't love that?). So whether you are snuggling up in an oversized version like Gigi Hadid or tucking in a more bodycon version like Elle Fanning, expect to seriously turn heads in this season's most alluring cut.

Gigi knows that the key to any successful sightseeing expedition is movable clothes. The supermodel stayed warm and effortlessly chic by layering her oversized, ribbed version with a like-colored denim dress that peeked out just a touch under her sweater. Her skintight black leggings added some much needed shape and her ankle-tight booties streamlined the look. A cross body bag and half-up topknot solidified the off-duty look.

An extra-high turtleneck like Olivia Palermo's sleeveless version instantly draws attention upwards towards your face. To avoid looking shapeless in a boxy cropped sweater, style the structure with a silk patterned blouse, like Olivia's striped, wine-colored version. By pairing a softer fabric underneath, you draw attention away from the midsection and to the arms adding an elongating, feminine touch to the look.

For those of us not quite yet enduring cooler temperatures, or for those of us that plan on staying indoors, the cut-off turtleneck is the answer. The key to pulling off the casual sleeveless look, and keeping it fall appropriate, is the textured color palate. Team an autumnal colored tank, like Kate Bosworth's burgundy number, with a pair of classic wash jeans and all-black accessories to break up the look.

A tight grey turtleneck like Elle's is a seemingly too-casual for dusk option, but taking this version into evening-specific territory is easy with just a few styling tricks. To get a similar look, the secret is in the pants. Since the shirt is so fitted, a wide leg pressed trouser pant that hits at the waist will add a dose of volume. The ruffled waistline and pale pink color keep the look age-appropriate on the young star.

Many a turtleneck sweater dress is predictably bodycon, so we rejoice when we see celebs like Emily Ratajkowski rock a version that's decidedly less obvious. Not to worry though, this number is attention grabbing enough when paired with the season's hottest thigh high boots, revealing just a sliver of skin.
