Are these two for real?

That was the thought that crossed our minds numerous times while reading Complex's candid interview with Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt—the couple better known as Speidi, who shot to fame as the villainous duo on the hit MTV reality show The Hills

As for the answer to the aforementioned question? Well, we're not quite sure, considering the pair, who wed in 2009, live by the age-old saying, "any press is good press," and as a result, it's tough to take any thing they say seriously (case in point, Pratt, 32, says of his wife, 29, "Tequila is like her spinach").

"Mercenaries is pretty much what we are. Call us in when you are ready for some action. That keeps the bills paid," Pratt tells the publication, pointing to their appearances on various reality shows such as I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! and Marriage Bootcamp.

While many may question Heidi and Spencer's career, the two have essentially accomplished what they've always wanted: "Their goal isn't to be liked—it never was," the article accurately states. "It's to be famous."

In fact, the two have all their tabloid covers—both good and bad with headlines like "Destroyed by Fame" and "Surgery Disaster"—framed in their home.

"To me, I can be like, 'Oh. That was $100 K!' Or, 'That was a bottle of Screaming Eagle that I bought for fun at Wolfgang's!' These take me back to, 'I made it,'" Pratt says, defending his spending habits. "People can bring me down all they want, but try to get on a cover. Try to get in a magazine. Good luck."

So, it should come as no surprise that the reality star still owns his massive crystal collection, which Hills fans may remember from the show.

"This is supposed to be bringing in money, but I can tell you it doesn't work. Citrine is supposed to bring wealth," Spencer explains. "I'm just waiting."

While Heidi and Spencer may have a number of regrets ("I would have done a lot of things differently," Pratt muses) and spend their days, as the article puts it, "watching movies and Snapchatting," the pair has no problem with the way things went down with Lauren Conrad

Pratt even finally reveals that he was the one who leaked the Lauren Conrad sex tape report (in season three of the show, Conrad confronted Heidi over the rumor and yelled "You know what you did") and Spencer still insists the tape exists. (Conrad had no comment for Complex regarding Pratt's latest remarks.)

"Lauren is a cold-hearted killer. That's what people don't get. She will cut you in your sleep," Spencer says, blaming Conrad for the way he and Heidi were depicted on the show. "She tried to destroy us. If you want to throw missiles, I'm throwing a nuke. This is how I operate."

Adds Heidi, "Today, I would be like, 'Bitch, you know what you did.'"

The couple's feud with Lauren caused rifts in both of their families, and Pratt reveals he is still not on speaking terms with his sister, Stephanie, and clearly has a contentious relationship with his mom.

"My mom's a Lauren supporter," Spencer says.

Regardless of their past, these two still have their eyes on the prize: fame.

"Reacclimating off that high of that fame and lifestyle was really hard," Heidi admits. "We had these expectations of, 'Oh, we're going to have our own show.' My expectation of life and where I thought we were going to be is so different from our reality."

Adds Spencer, "If you don't have your own show, as far as I'm concerned, you are not famous."

We'd love to hear him tell that to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.
