They're sexy, they're cute! They're popular to boot! And now, cheerleaders are considered members of an official sports team! Wait, what's that you say?
Cheerleading isn't a sport? Well, technically it wasn't. Until this past Wednesday, high school cheerleading was not recognized as an official sport in the state of California despite it totally being a fierce athletic pursuit.
Twitter is on fire following the game-changing announcement. Supporters are using the hashtag #AB949 (named after the bill) to sing their praise for the exciting news. Signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown, the bill was authored by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez.
Sorry not sorry for all the Bring It On lyrics you're about to be subjected to. We're just excited, okay!?
The assemblywoman tweeted her own excitement, thanking child athlete advocate Kimberly Archie for her helping hand in making the sport official.
Hey @kimberlyarchie -- we did it! Cheerleading will become a sport in CA, #ab949 signed into law today! Thanks for your critical help!

Gonzalez put out a press release stating, "Assembly Bill 949, known as the California High Schools Expanding Equality Respect and Safety (C.H.E.E.R.S.) Act, requires the California Department of Education to develop guidelines, procedures, and safety standards with the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) for high school cheerleading no later than July 1, 2017. To date, high school cheerleading has not enjoyed its own competition system like other high school sports and cheer athletes and their teams are forced to rely on private businesses to run competitions, which can be prohibitively expensive for the athletes and their families."
We don't know about you, but we're calling the crew to have a marathon screening of Bring It On to celebrate. Don't even front like you forgot all those life-changing cheers and chants of your late childhood!
How excited are you now that cheerleading is an official sport in California? Tell us in the comments!
