Contrary to its basic nature, the nude lip is far from boring. Depending on your skin tone, the hue can balance out a dramatic look or even emphasize a natural glow.

"A great nude lip can make the skin look fresh and eye color sparkle," touted celeb makeup artist Ashley Rebecca.

However, the wrong color can easily wash you out…or even age you. So, how does one navigate through the many dusty roses and beautiful beiges on the market? A general guideline involves keeping your skin tone in mind.

"For fair skin, opt for a nude with a slight pink undertone," said Ashley, who recommended Kismet Liquid Lipstick in Elope. "For medium skin, try one with a slight orange undertone (like NARS Audacious Lipstick in Raquel), and for dark skin, use something that will give you color yet blend with your natural lip color (see: Chanel Rouge Allure Intense Long-Wear Lip Colour in Farouche)."

That said, we are so inundated with nude options that really the best secret to finding the perfect color for you involves trying as many shades as you can. Yes, consider this your excuse to go shopping.
