At the 2015 Golden Globes, George Clooney donned a "Je Suis Charlie" button to pay tribute to those lost in the Charlie Hebdo attack. At last year's Emmy Awards, many stars wore green ribbons to raise awareness of mental health following Robin Williams' suicide.
"I dealt with it firsthand and lost someone really dear to me," Allison Janney told reporters at the time, referring to mental illness. "Everyone is feeling that."
Many were spotted wearing green ribbons again Sunday night at the 2015 Emmy Awards, but they weren't meant to be confused with last year's cause. Many believed that Jeffrey Tambor, Gaby Hoffmann, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and more wore the non-designer accessory this year to call attention to transgender rights, but they were actually supporting President Barack Obama's climate change plan.
The small ribbons had the hashtag #DemandClimateAction written in white letters, which refers to Obama and the EPA's Clean Power Plan.
The Natural Resources Defense Council tweeted its thanks to those who showed their support, "Thanks to @jeffreytambor, @OfficialJLD, Louis C.K., @IamDonCheadle and others for supporting climate action!" The NRDC's website also explains its mission and the stars' inclusion.
"If you're watching the Emmy Awards tonight, you've seen some of Hollywood's biggest stars demanding climate action from world leaders by prominently wearing a green ribbon distributed by NRDC supporters," the website said. "It sure looks good with that best actor trophy, Jeffrey Tambor. Congrats!
"Climate change is the most critical humanitarian crisis of our time," the statement continued. "In December, hundreds of world leaders will gather in Paris with an urgent mission: working together to finalize a new global agreement for combating climate change."
