No actual win, no problem for the acerbic funnyman

Ricky Gervais doesn't always host these things, for some reason, but even when he doesn't...

He usually goes ahead and assigns himself one of the funniest bits of the night.

On stage to present, the Derek star (a two-time actual Emmy winner and a nominee this year for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or TV Movie) decided it didn't matter who won or lost—"I haven't lost yet, still hope," he giggled, shaking his head and adding, "There's no hope. The smart money's on [Mark] Rylance or [Timothy] Hutton. Someone else, basically! It doesn't matter."

Then he leveled his gaze at the camera and said dourly, "No one remembers. In a few days' time, people see a picture of me up here, they go, 'He probably won an Emmy.' They've seen me talking to Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet, they go, 'He talked to Ryan Seacrest, he's a winner.'"

All deadpan.

"So take a picture...In fact, can I have an Emmy? Where's the Emmy girl Can she come out... Can I get an Emmy?" he looked over his shoulder. Out came the young lady with the Emmy, upon which Gervais commented, "Sexist, no Emmy men?" He then proceeded to wield the Emmy in the air, mock-emotionally. Mock-hysterically, in fact.

"So, take a picture of that. 'Thank you so much! Thank you!' Tweet that."

Consider it tweeted. But did you remember...

"When I won the Oscar for something, acting or something, something like that," Gervais continued, "um, everyone thought Daniel Day-Lewis had won it. He hadn't, he just acted like he had, so that's what I've done. OK, let's get on with it."

And with that, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series was awarded to Veep's Tony Hale. We bet he'll remember.
