The 23-year-old "Cool For the Summer" stunner took the stage by storm on Sunday at the MTV Video Music Awards, where she performed her summertime anthem and looked sexier than ever in a sparkly purple leotard.
But before Lovato's killer performance, the former Disney star, who has been more than open about her past battles with substance abuse, bipolar disorder and an eating disorder, gave herself an inspiring personal pep talk, the evidence of which was caught in audio from her microphone.

The "Heart Attack" stunner, who celebrated three years of sobriety in March, is an advocate for mental health and was previously named a celebrity spokesperson of the new Be Vocal: Speak Up for Mental Health campaign.
"I wish that more people could understand from a point where it's not a choice to have an addiction," Lovato, who spent time in rehab at the age of 18 for "emotional and physical issues," said on the Today show. "And with bipolar disorder, it's a chemical imbalance and it's something that you have to figure out your own treatment with your own team and in order to do that, it takes time. And finally, I'm in a great place where I can say that recovery is possible."
That same month, Lovato also announced that she, Nick Jonas and their manager had formed a new record label, Safehouse Records, and she shared a heartfelt tribute to her new business partner, Phil McIntyre, on Instagram.
"This man not only believed in me when I was 15 and made my entire career happen, but he fought so f--king hard to get me sober," Lovato wrote about her manager, alongside a photo of the two. "When so many others had given up on me, he never did. He told me he cared too much about me to watch me self-destruct...Therefore at the very end of my drinking and using he gave me one last chance...Get sober and he'll stay, or he'd have to leave."
She added, "He is one of the very few people who LITERALLY saved. my. life. I don't think I'd be alive without him for many different reasons."
