An interaction between actress Ellen Page and presidential hopeful Ted Cruz has gone viral today after the 28-year-old Juno star confronted the Republican United States Senator while he was grilling pork chops at the Iowa State Fair on Friday.
ABC News has video of the heated exchange, during which the actress, who was wearing a hat and sunglasses, confronted Cruz about "the persecution of gays in the workplace and LGBT rights" (the senator has previously voiced his support for the controversial religious freedom bill and is strongly opposed to gay marriage).
"What about the question about LGBT people being fired for being gay-trans?" Page, who came out as gay in February 2014, asked.
"Well, what we're seeing right now, we're seeing Bible-believing Christians being persecuted for," Cruz said as Page interjected and replied, "For discriminating against LGBT people."
"No, for living according to their faith," Cruz, whom, according to ABC News did not know that he was speaking to a famous actress, responded.
"Well, would you use that argument in segregation?" Page, who reportedly spoke to the senator for five minutes, questioned, prompting Cruz to say "Now I'm happy to answer your question, but not to have a back-and-forth debate," before continuing on with his argument.
"No one has the right to force someone else to abandon their faith and their conscience," he said, "Imagine, hypothetically, you had a gay florist and imagine two evangelicals wanted to get married and they decide, ‘You know what, I disagree with your faith and I don't want to provide flowers.'"
He added, "The gay florist has every right to say ‘If I disagree with your faith, and I don't want to participate, you know what, there are lots of other people you can buy flowers from'" before he attempted to draw a rather odd parallel. "Just like we don't have the right to force a Jewish rabbi to conduct a Christian wedding."
According to THR, the heated exchange will appear on a forthcoming show Page is hosting for Vice Media titled Gaycation With Ellen Page.
"I'm here today because I am gay," the actress said in her personal coming out speech. "And because maybe I can make a difference. To help others have an easier and more hopeful time. Regardless, for me, I feel a personal obligation and a social responsibility."
