Yes, pleats!

Pleated skirts, especially those in the midi to ankle length category, can oftentimes feel either dowdy and dated or too prim and proper, so we wind up bailing on the trend altogether. Better safe than sorry, right? Not so fast. If you're on the fence or just plain stumped on how to wear the time-tested style, we highly suggest you turn your attention to chic trendsetters who have managed to reinvent the pleated skirt with just a few modern updates.

Pleats can feel a bit old-fashioned, so to change it up, take a page from style master Jamie Chung's book. Pair a black and white midi-length striped version with a classic denim button-up. Since a tailored dress shirt can teeter on too covered up, soften the look by skipping a few buttons for a sexy, yet elegant flash of skin.

Mixing prints is tricky, but if you hit the mark, you can look like bombshell Kat Graham. Avoid getting lost in a sea of fabrics by pairing a colorful, micro-pleated flouncy skirt with a solid color, structured crop top to help define your shape. Metallic pumps and grown-up pigtail braids keep the look fresh and youthful.

Beyoncé's baby sis Solange Knowles throws it back to the '70s in all her burnt-orange glory. The metallic bronze skirt, gold strappy sandals and shimmery bronze makeup are broken up by a peachy, fitted shell. Top it off with voluminous teased hair for a polished look that screams disco-ready.

Kristen Wiig sure knows how to make an appearance. When you go with a floor-length, pleated number, you have to take measures not to venture into too-formal territory. Keep it simple with a bright, loose-fitting sheath on top for a relaxed take on dressy. A sun-kissed tan and tousled wavy hair are also a welcomed casual vibe.
