Some may like to refer to Frank Gifford as a sports broadcaster, Hall of Fame athlete or football star.

But for Cassidy Gifford, he was simply called dad.

A day after the former New York Giants player died at the age of 84, passing away peacefully at his Connecticut home, his daughter paid tribute on Instagram to one of her "best friends."

"Very few people are blessed enough to call their father a legend, and an even smaller number are able to share that notion with the rest of the world," she captioned a father-daughter throwback photo. "Today of all days I can genuinely say I am humbled by the outpour of love and support my family has received."

She continued, "Yesterday, I lost my best friend... His kindness was infectious, and his grace, beyond compare .. And despite the worldly passing of an incredible man, I undoubtedly know heaven gained one stud of an angel."

The pair's special bond was on full display during a 2001 interview when Frank was asked about his family. While his career kept him busy during part of Cassidy and brother Cody Gifford's childhood, they made sure to make up for lost time later.

"I raised a family I hardly knew and they're my best friends now but I hardly knew them when I was working, playing football and later into television," he admitted to E! News. "Now I know pretty much all of Cody's classmates and Cassidy's and I love the carpool line. I'm having a lot of fun with that. We're having a great time with it." In addition to Cody and Cassidy, Frank had three children from a previous marriage.

Today, Cassidy and her family, including mom Kathie Lee Gifford, are relying on their faith to get through a difficult time.

"Philippians 4:13 has never rung so true..You were an unparalleled Giant in all sense of the word, Dad," Cassidy wrote. "So keep doin' you up there, because no one does it better, and no one ever will."

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked viewers and fans to consider donating to their charity Cassidy's Place. Learn more about the cause by clicking here.
