Gavin Rossdale is turning to retail therapy.

The Bush frontman was photographed shopping with his dog and a friend in L.A. Monday, the same day his wife, Gwen Stefani, filed for divorce. The musicians had been together 20 years and married nearly 13 years. They are parents to three sons: Kingston Rossdale, 9, Zuma Rossdale, 6, and Apollo Rossdale, 17 months.

The former couple confirmed their breakup after filing paperwork in L.A. "While the two of us have come to the mutual decision that we will no longer be partners in marriage, we remain partners in parenthood and are committed to jointly raising our three sons in a happy and healthy environment," they said in a statement. "To that end, we respectfully request privacy from the media during this time."

The No Doubt singer cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split, and she is asking for joint custody. Gwen also checked the box to terminate Gavin's ability for spousal support. The "Glycerine" singer filed his response at the same time, and he is also requesting joint custody of his three children with Gwen.

Gwen, 45, and Gavin, 49, would have celebrated their anniversary next month.

To the outside world, the end of their marriage comes as a shock.

However, Gwen has never pretended that marriage has been easy.

"Like everybody else, we go through our cycles of being so happy and then being like, 'Oh my gosh.' And then being so happy it's crazy," the "Hey Baby" singer said on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in November. "I mean, I can't believe that I've known him as long as I have and we still have fun together." Two months later, on NBC's Today, Gwen seemed committed to Gavin and explained why they worked so well as a couple. "We both want to be married, and we both want to be good parents," The Voice coach said. "So, I feel really proud of what we've done together."

When Gwen was profiled in the March issue of Cosmopolitan magazine, she opened up about their ups and downs. "We go through so much together—it's a miracle that we could stay together this long. [Gavin's] on a short tour right now, and he wrote me the sweetest note this morning. It's good to have those days when we both do our own things. I think that's what keeps relationships going, when both people can be themselves and have their own individuality," she said. "That's especially important for women—it's hard to find time for yourself."

Of course, now that they're single, they'll have plenty of time for themselves.
