Taxation without representation...until now!
In case you didn't know, that's the phrase on the license plates in Washington, D.C., as our nation's capital it does not have full representation as a state, which John Oliver finds totally unacceptable as it restricts residents' voting rights. And he's finally doing something about it!
On Sunday night's episode of Last Week Tonight, Oliver decided to finally give our capital city the respect it deserves, explaining, "In 2009, a bill to give D.C. a vote was introduced in the Senate, and the Senate did the most d--kish thing imaginable: passing it, but with a little addition." How did he do this? By adding it to that annoying song we all had to sing in elementary school that rhymes all the state names!
"We have added an amendment to that song," Oliver said, asking his crowd, "Would you like to hear it boys and girls?"
Cue Oliver running over to sit with an adorable group of 19 children to sing on behalf of Washington, D.C.
"There are 50 states in total and we'll sing their names with glee, but there's one place that got shafted and it's Washington D.C.," they sang, before Oliver asked them to "be more specific about the problem."
"Any choice that D.C. makes is easily suppressed," the choir answered, "'Cause some a--hole with rider who might live in Tennessee can destroy a needle program for preventing HIV."
Oh, but wait, it gets even better when Oliver asked them to sing about a solution: "Let them have gun laws! Let them have weed! Let them decide the things that they need!"
But if you do think there should only be 50 states, Oliver and the kids have an idea: Kick out Florida! Harsh, but true, right?
