Gone Baby Gone actor Sean Malone died after a drowning accident put him into a coma, the Boston Fire Department confirms. He was 54.

Malone had been in a coma since July 20 before succumbing to his injuries, the BFD tweeted late Wednesday night. He was surrounded by his son Sean, parents and siblings at Boston Medical Center. "His family would like to thank the dedicated staff at BMC, Boston EMS, those that rescued Sean and friends for their support," the department wrote.

The Fighter actor reportedly swam out too far at a South Boston Beach, and proceeded to alarm an off-duty firefighter, Chris Flaherty. But by the time Flaherty reached Malone, he was already underwater. He brought him to shore before being taken to the hospital.

Malone also had a small role in The Forger.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Malone's family.
