"I know there's a story here, and I think everybody will hear about it."
The Boston Globe was ready to investigate the Catholic Church in its own city, and now Hollywood is, too. Rachel McAdams, Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton and more play reporters at the famous newspaper in the forthcoming film, Spotlight, and are ready to do whatever it takes to put the "spotlight" on a corrupt system.
Liev Schreiber, who plays Marty Baron, editor of the Boston Globe, learns "the Boston priests molested kids in six different parishes over the past 30 years. The Church found out about it and did nothing."
Keaton's team, known as Spotlight, is then put in charge of investigating the molestations but quickly learn there is a lot more to it than they ever expected. Based on a true story, the movie examines how the Church tried to cover up the crimes taking place in the journalists' backyard.
"We need to focus on the institution," Schreiber says. "Show me it came from the top down."
The official selection of the 2015 Venice Film Festival and 2015 Toronto Film Festival, Spotlight reveals how the newspaper uncovered the massive scandal of child molestation and the cover-up within the local diocese. The group of reporters won the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for their investigation in 2003. Their findings ultimately led to Cardinal Bernard Law's resignation.
The movie, which has already generated plenty of awards buzz, is slated to hit select theaters Nov. 6, 2015, but will go wide on Nov. 20. It also stars John Slattery, Stanley Tucci and Billy Crudup.
