Friday Night Lights creator Peter Berg is under fire from fans for a cheap shot he took at Caitlyn Jenner's courage during the 2015 ESPY Awards.
The Lone Survivor director took to his Instagram to voice his displeasure with the gold medalist winning the prestigious Arthur Ashe Courage Award at last night's ESPYs, inferring that a soldier who lost both of his legs was more deserving.
"One man traded 2 legs for the freedom of the other to trade 2 balls for 2 boobs," the meme said. "Guess which Man made the cover of Vanity Fair, was praised for his courage by President Obama and is to be honored with the "Arthur Ashe Courage Award" by ESPN?" Berg's comment to the meme he reposted was "Yup."
A slew of backlash ensued on Berg's account with one commenter saying, "I loved watching Friday Night Lights so much because I was constantly watching people finding the courage to succeed and understand themselves better and most especially watching people who struggle find their place... I'm deeply disappointed to see someone I have revered so much with my clear full heart, post something like this."
Berg wasn't the only one to put his foot in his mouths about Jenner receiving the award.
Philadelphia radio host Howard Eskin tweeted an apology after saying it was "insulting" to have Caitlyn win the award and ESPN only gave her the award as a ratings ploy.
During her moving acceptance speech last night, Jenner brought up the critics who said she didn't deserve the award saying, "So for the people out there wondering what this is all about, whether it's about courage or controversy or publicity, it's about what happens from here. It's not just about one person. It's about thousands of people. It's not just about me. It's about all of us accepting one another. We're all different. It's not a bad thing. It's a good thing."
ESPN also defended choosing Jenner with producer Maura Mandt telling Sports Illustrated this week, "I think Caitlyn's decision to publicly come out as a transgender woman and live as Caitlyn Jenner displayed enormous courage and self-acceptance."
