Well that was unexpected.

The end of tonight's episode of True Detective took a little turn for the not so great when Ray (Colin Farrell) was gunned down by a guy in a bird mask (or some sort of half bird/half man creature) with a shotgun while doing a little side investigating for Frank (Vince Vaughn).

Right after Ray had learned that his ex-wife was filing for sole custody of their kid (who might actually be her rapist's kid), and then he talked about how the best way to get out of his problems would be to die, Frank asked/blackmailed him to go check out dead city manager Casper's second house, which was mainly used for sex purposes, in order to make sure there was no evidence of his potential deal with Frank before the police officially found the house.

While inside, Ray found lots of sex play-related items, a pool of blood, and Mr. Bird Man, who kindly put a few rounds into his chest.

Soooo is he dead? We want to say no, because how rude of True Detective to kill even a mustachioed Colin Farrell so early in the season, but we also want to say yes, because unexpected twists are fun. Either way, we've got a lot of questions for the bird man, whoever he may be.

Elsewhere in tonight's episode, we discovered that Paul (Taylor Kitsch) has some serious mommy issues to go along with the penis issues we learned about last week. We also learned that Casper, the dead city manager, had a thing about sex, but not in the same way that Ani (Rachel McAdams) has a thing about sex, but maybe more like how Ray has a thing for violence, or sort of like how Paul has a thing for his motorcycle.

In the midst of learning more about everyone's weird issues with various things, we saw a close-up of Casper's groin, which had been hit with a shotgun at close range, and that was not fun. Not fun at all, and wish we hadn't seen it. Anybody got any good eye bleach?

Someday we'll figure out what's actually going on in this show. For now, we're off to light up our e-cig and shear off our hair with nail clippers in an effort to emulate whatever Rachel McAdams' character has going on, because we're strangely digging it.

Do you think Ray is actually dead? Head to the comments to discuss!
