Pablo Sandoval Benched After Using Instagram During Red Sox Game: "I Know I F---ed Up"

The third baseman had used his cellphone while in the bathroom

There's no Instagramming in baseball!

Boston Red Sox third baseman Pablo Sandoval was benched on Thursday after admitting he used Instagram a day earlier to "like" a woman's photos as the team played against the Braves in Atlanta, where the home team won 5-2.

The 28-year-old told reporters on Thursday that he apologized to his teammates and manager and accepted his one-day punishment, issued because he violated the team's social media policy, Comcast SportsNet reported. Sandoval was back on the team's lineup on Friday for their game against the Kansas City Royals.

Sandoval said he used Instagram on his cellphone when he went to the bathroom in the seventh inning of Wednesday's game, Comcast SportsNet and ESPN reported. While inside, he "liked" two photos of Instagram user @diva_legacy.

"I know I f---ed up," ESPN quoted him as saying on Thursday. "I made a mistake. I learned from that. I'm a human being, I made a mistake, so I apologize to my teammates, to the team, to the organization, the fans support."

An MLB spokesman told ESPN that the incident is under review.

The outlet said MLB Standards and On-Field Operations Regulations states that "Uniformed personnel, clubhouse staff and equipment staff are prohibited from using cellular phones, including any type of portable or mobile phone, laptop, texting device or similar portable equipment while on the bench, in the bullpens or on the playing field once batting practice has begun; and are prohibited from using such devices in the clubhouse within 30 minutes of the start of a game."

"It was the first time, so I take the mistake and learn from that," Sandoval said. "I move forward to try not to do it anymore. It's one thing I let my teammates down. Ain't going to happen no more, so I learned from that."
