Sometimes, you just need to take a step back.

Jared Padalecki worried his rabid fans when he abruptly canceled a couple of appearances last month, but the Supernatural star was back in action over the weekend at the "squee!"-inducing Gilmore Girls reunion held during the ATX Television Festival.

His manager said at the time that he was suffering from exhaustion, and it sounds as though he really benefited from that R&R.

"This summer, I just got off a couple-week stint where I literally turned my phone off and spent time with my family. Like no e-mail, no text, no phone," Padalecki told E! News at ATX. "It's amazing and I've never done it. Everybody needs to do it."

He said, coincidentally, that just when he decided to turn his phone back on, his wife's quote of the day on Instagram was a reminder to unplug every once in a while to give yourself a chance to reset.

"I was like, 'That was me!'" Padalecki recalled. "I totally unplugged. So that was where I was."

"I did have a chance to reboot, and it was amazing," the 32-year-old actor also told Us Weekly about his time off to decompress.

"I was 17 years old when I moved to Los Angeles, and I just kind of got into a habit..." he told the mag. "Everything was like, work, work, work, work, do, do, do, do. And the last summer, my life has changed a lot. I have a wife. I have two sons and so I really needed a chance to just unplug. And it was the best thing I've ever done. I'll probably do it every year."

You've been forewarned.

Meanwhile, Padalecki looked psyched to join his former GG co-stars, including TV love Rory "Alexis Bledel" Gilmore, at ATX, sharing a pic of selfie with wife Genevieve taken en route.

"On the way to #GilmoreGirlsreunion at #ATXFestival with my beautiful bride @realGpad," the smiling actor wrote.

Jared and Genevieve have two sons together, Shepherd and Thomas.

Padalecki, who has battled depression in the past, also told Us that taking time off was actually playing against type for him in real life, so he's pretty pleased that he managed to give himself a break. "You find out you're finite," he said. "And for a guy like me who's really Type A, put me to work, give me more, do more! It's difficult to admit that you're a finite individual, right? But it was humbling, and I'm very proud I got to do it."
