Today is a big day for Ireland—a very big day.

The country is currently in the midst of a referendum vote to legalize same-sex marriage. The official question on the ballot is this: Do you believe that "Marriage may be contracted in accordance with law by two persons without distinction as to their sex"? More than 3.2 million people are eligible to vote in the historic decision, and early forecasts believe that turnout is extremely high.

According to the rules of this specific referendum, no mail-in voting was allowed, so many Irish living abroad chose to travel back to their home country to cast their votes—the hashtag #Hometovote has been trending today.

An affirmative vote in support of marriage equality would make Ireland only the 20th country to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide. That's particularly impressive considering that up until 1993 any homosexual activity was considered criminal.

The votes won't be counted until tomorrow, but today the cause has already been getting a lot of attention even across the pond. Celebs of all kinds, Irish and non, took to Twitter to voice their support for the movement, using the trending hashtag #VoteYes. Reading through the inspiring messages is enough to make a gal choke up. (We're emotional, okay?)

Now the only thing left to do is wait for the results to roll in—and tweet along, of course.
