With David Letterman counting down his final days as host of The Late Show, it's only natural that his celebrity guests would want to commemorate their visits, so what's a better way than to snap a pic?

"Hey, can I get a selfie?" Tom Hanks, 58, asked Monday while appearing on Letterman's late-night show.

Even though taking a selfie might not be surprising, Hanks' use of the selfie stick might be! Not only did he pull out the tool without hesitation, he used it seamlessly. Letterman, 68, was first caught off guard by Hanks' new toy but then got used to the idea when he found out about its capabilities.

The Forrest Gump star's wife, however, was apparently anti-selfie stick, Hanks explained, but then she got used to it once they say them in Italy.

"They sell these selfies all over Florence, which was the birthplace of the Renaissance," Hanks explained.

"By and large [selfies] can be pretty goofy," he added, "but look at the throw on this baby."

He then proceeded to take a page out of Kim Kardashian's book and taught Letterman the correct procedure for taking the perfect selfie. "We get it above the chin," the Oscar winner explained. "Look at the throw on that baby, Dave."

"That's a beauty," responded Letterman.

With the host's retirement right around the corner, Hanks speculated that he would be going to "space camp" and insisted he bring a stick along with him. The added bonus about the stick, Letterman noted, was that it makes it look like someone took the picture for you.

"Which will work for you Dave because it will mean you've been on vacation with a friend," Hanks joked.

"It doesn't need to be that insulting," Letterman responded.
