Julia Roberts and David Letterman's late-night love affair is over.

The actress made her 26th and final appearance on The Late Show Wednesday, and though she was often the one who asked for a kiss in previous episodes, it was Letterman who initiated their final TV lip-lock.

"The first time I was on this show was to promote Mystic Pizza, and as a fan of the show, did not want to come on because I had seen you absolutely dismember young actresses of my kind of peer group," the 47-year-old movie star recalled. "And I thought, 'I'm going to go on, and he's going to know within 10 seconds what my IQ is, and you are going to like a samurai, just sort of like Benihana me into pieces and I'll be left for dead and forgotten.'"

"Well, I'm not going to dispute this," Letterman, 68, replied.

The host then asked why she kept coming back.

"You didn't behave that way to me," Roberts said. "Thus the 26th appearance."

Letterman still wanted to understand her fear, so Roberts joked, "I think stupid people annoy you." He replied, "Well, that explains my problem with self-loathing."

Roberts wanted to make the interview last a little longer, as Letterman will retire on May 20. "We have, what, four minutes of our life together left?" she asked just before a montage of their may kisses was shown. Afterward, Letterman led Roberts to the main stage and gave her a big kiss on the lips. "Woah!" the host said.

The actress signed off with a sweet message. "I just want to say, David Letterman, I love you and I thank you for all of the joy and the laughs and the intelligence you have brought to us for 33 years," she said.

"I love you," Letterman told Roberts. "Thank you."
