Howard Stern was just trying to give David Letterman a sendoff smooch, but the Late Show host wasn't into the idea of locking lips!

The thwarted kiss happened Monday, just after the Sirius XM radio host playfully called the soon-to-be-retiring late-night host out for not inviting him out to a post-show dinner with Dave and Don Rickles. Dave responded with some snippy commentary about Howards's flashy ensemble—words strong enough to bring the shock jock to his feet.

"What? I dressed up for you," he quipped. "Come here...come over here. Is this goodbye? Is this our final time together?"

Dave looked a little uncomfortable as Howard grabbed his hands and pulled him towards him. "No, what are you gonna do?" asked the late-night host, who promptly planted a light kiss on Howard's hand before withdrawing his own hands and trying to slink away.

Dave happily obliged to Howard's pleas for a hug, but he instantly objected when his fellow comedian tried to use their embrace to lock him into a kiss.

"Kiss me!"

"No!"

"Kiss me!"

"NO!"

"Kiss me now!"

Dave continuously refused, pushing off Howard's advances and trying to throw to commercial without cracking up.

This rejected PDA wasn't the only touchy topic covered on CBS' Late Show—Howard happily brought up Dave's longtime rumored fremeny, asking, "...are you thinking about having Jay Leno on next week for your last guest?"

When the audience clapped, Howard quickly silenced them, exclaiming, "Don't applaud that!"

There was some hemming and hawing, but Howard wanted all the facts. "Is it true you put out the offer?" he asked. He wanted to know, too, if Jay had previously asked Dave to make an appearance during his final days on the Tonight Show.

So is there really no late-night love lost, and will Jay be making an appearance Dave's final show on May 20? Watch the clip above to find out!
