Yeah, that doesn't apply to new TV shows and their first trailers! All this week at the 2015 Upfronts, Fox, ABC, NBC, CBS and the CW are unveiling their new series for the 2015 fall TV season, debuting photos and trailers.
Just like in real-life, first impressions are everything for new TV shows, so we're going to give your our instant reaction to each and every new show's trailer, ranking them as we go along. While some already have us counting down the days until summer is over just so we can see more, other trailers have us either shaking our heads in dismay or just shaking from laughter. (The bad kind of laughter, that is.)
We've seen ABC Fox and NBC's new fall shows and ranked them in order of what's got us marking our calendars. Be sure to keep checking back with us for our updated ranking from worst to best!
No. 30: People Are Talking (NBC)
What It's About: Two diverse couples talk about stuff. Like race, sex and whether or not the new hot babysitter also dabbles in porn.
Instant Reaction: Um, just us or does anyone else feel like they just watched the entire episode in that trailer? And it's never a good sign when the meatiest story in your pilot episode is centered on a hot babysitter. Because that's never been done before. (Also not a good sign: NBC has is scheduled for Friday nights.)
No. 29: Angel From Hell (CBS)
What It's About: A comedy about a rude, offensive and downright annoying guardian angel.
Instant Reaction: Jane Lynch in another Jane Lynch role. We want to like this...but we also wanted to stop watching the trailer about 30 seconds in. Pass.
No. 28: Of Kings and Prophets (ABC)
What It's About: The Bible or something.
Instant Reaction: This is trying to be The Bible and Game of Thrones, but no, no thankssszzzzzz.
No. 27: Rosewood (Fox)
What's It's About: Morris Chestnut stars as a brilliant private pathologist who uses wildly sophisticated technology and his drive to live life to the fullest to help a tough-as-nails detective (Jaina Lee Ortiz) and the Miami PD uncover clues no one else can see.
Instant Reaction: This is basically every other male-female duo procedural ever. It's like Castle. Or Bones. Nothing new, nothing exciting. Next!
No. 26: Dr. Ken (ABC)
What It's About: Community's Ken Jeong is a father and doctor. Hijinks ensue.
Instant Reaction: Ken Jeong, you're better than this…
No. 25: Lucifer (Fox)
What's It's About: When the devil's away, the demons come out to play! Tom Ellis stars as the charming, charismatic and handsome-as-hell original fallen angel, who, bored and unhappy in Hell, takes refuge in Los Angeles, where he uses his gift of persuasion to punish bad guys. But the longer he's away from the underworld, the greater the threat that the worst of humanity could escape.
Instant Reaction: We're going to go ahead and blame the person who cut this trailer together for this show's low ranking, because we are so pumped for this DC Comics show. Ellis seems like a good fit to play the devil himself, but the promo is totally lackluster. We're going to hold out hope that the actual show is way better than this trailer.
No. 24: Uncle Buck (ABC)
What It's About: It's another TV version of the movie Uncle Buck.
Instant Reaction: It's another TV version of the movie Uncle Buck.
No. 23: Bordertown (Fox)
What's It's About: If you're a Seth MacFarlane fan, then this one's for you! Bordertown is a satirical look at the cultural shifts taking place in America. Exploring family, politics and everything in between with a cross-cultural wink, the series centers on two very different families living in a fictional Southwest desert town on the U.S.-Mexico border.
Instant Reaction: If you like MacFarlane's brand of comedy, then you'll love this show. If you don't, then you won't. It's as simple as that.
No. 22: Limitless (CBS)
What's It's About: Bradley Cooper's movie about the drug NZT that allows you to become the smartest person on the planet...for a limited time. Add in a FBI sting operation surrounding the sale and use of this illegal drug, and you've got CBS' new drama.
Instant Reaction: Greek's Jake McDorman takes on Bradley Cooper's role from the movie, while Cooper gets to flex his villain chops. The trailer doesn't look as good as the movie, and seeing as how the movie wasn't all that great...you get the idea.
No. 21: OIL (ABC)
What It's About: Chace Crawford and Don Johnson in a primetime soap about oil…It's kind of Dallas?
Instant Reaction: Embrace the soapiness and we'll all be fine. Also hi Nate Archibald.
No. 20: Heartbreaker (NBC)
What's It's About: Melissa George stars as a world-class heart surgeon who isn't afraid to speak her mind. People are shocked by this because she's a woman.
Instant Reaction: Why is a woman being good at her job and bold still supposed to be groundbreaking?!
No. 19: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (The CW)
What It's About: Rebecca Bunch (series creator Rachel Bloom) gives up her great job in NYC to follow a guy to West Covina, Calif. for love. Even though they're not together.
Instant Reaction: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is just that: CRAZY. It's a dark comedy with musical elements. On the CW. See? Crazy. But the trailer has some funny laughs (emoji humor FTW!) and Bloom is charming as heck, so we definitely think it has potential because it's just so weird. But we also think it may have been a better fit at Showtime, where it was originally ordered.
No. 18: The Frankenstein Code (Fox)
What's It's About: A disgraced, 75-year-old ex-sheriff, whose life ends at the hands of corrupt cops, is brought back to life and given a second chance by a pair of young tech scientists, as a 35-year-old (Rob Kazinsky) with unpredictable near-superhuman abilities.
Instant Reaction: The concept is original and intriguing, but the end result was boring. Plus, watching Kazinsky pretend to be an old man stuck in a young man's body was...actually comical.
No. 17: Life In Pieces (CBS)
What's It's About: CBS' version of Modern Family.
Instant Reaction: It's CBS' version of Modern Family. Still funny. Just not as good.
No. 16: The Real O'Neals (ABC)
What It's About: An Irish Catholic family who appears very proper on paper, but not everything is as it seems—but this isn't a drama! It's a family comedy.
Instant Reaction: Yesssss Martha Plimpton! If it weren't for her, we wouldn't be as into it. In Martha Plimpton we trust.
No. 15: Wicked City (ABC)
What It's About: Chuck Bass Ed Westwick is a serial killer in Los Angeles in the 1980s.
Instant Reaction: Chuck Bass is back and being creepy? Cool, cool, cool.
No. 14: The Player (NBC)
What It's About: A former military operative turned security expect who is drawn into a high-stakes game in Las Vegas, where an organization of wealthy individuals gamble on his ability to stop some of the biggest crimes imaginable from happening. Will be able able to take them from the inside and avenge his wife's death or will the house win?
Instant Reaction: OK, so we're a little confused as to what the heck is actually happening, but this show definitely has our curiosity and our attention. And Wesley Snipes looks like he's having all kinds of fun in this devilish role. Though it seems like a trailer (and concept) more fit for a movie, we'll take a chance and roll the dice on this one. (Get ready for ALL the gambling puns.)
No. 13: Minority Report (Fox)
What It's About: Based on Steven Spielberg's movie, this drama follows the partnership between one of the pre-cogs (Stark Sands) haunted by his visions of the future and a cop (Meagan Good) haunted by her past, as they race to stop the worst crimes before they happen.
Instant Reaction: The trailer seemed a bit underwhelming, and we're definitely missing Tom Cruise, but we can't wait to see this sequel/reboot. The special effects look awesome.
No. 12: Code Black (CBS)
What It's About: The busiest ER in the country is the perfect training ground for these surgical residents. But will the drama be too much for them to handle?
Instant Reaction: Another hour-long medical drama, so nothing too groundbreaking. But we are here for Marcia Gay Harden!
No. 11: The Muppets (ABC)
What It's About: What goes on in the life of The Muppets? You're about to find out.
Instant Reaction: Who doesn't love The Muppets? But there was something a little lacking in this trailer.
No. 10: Quantico (ABC)
What It's About: A group of new FBI recruits mix it up…until one is suspected of committing a devastating terrorist attacked.
Instant Reaction: Grey's Anatomy meets Homeland. Intrigued and cautious sums it up!
No. 9: Blindspot (NBC)
What It's About: A woman with no memory of who she is discovered, covered with intricate tattoos, including the name of an FBI agent on her back. Turns out, each tat is a crime to solve with more mysteries around every corner.
Instant Reaction: OK, this just looks super-crazy and super-cool, like that awesome kid in high school who never gave you the time of day-cool. The shot of Jaimie Alexander, naked and covered in tattoos, stepping out of a body bag in the middle of Times Square? EPIC. And man, the Thor star is a far stronger person than we are for signing on to deal with putting on those temporary tattoos every day.
No. 8: The Grinder (Fox)
What It's About: A famous TV lawyer (Rob Lowe) who, after his hit series, The Grinder, is canceled, moves back home and joins his brother (Fred Savage) at their family's real-life law firm–despite having no formal education, no bar certification, no license to practice and no experience in an actual courtroom.
Instant Reaction: Oh Rob Lowe, we've missed you on our TV screens. This is the perfect role for him post-Parks and Recreation, and the chemistry between him and Savage is off the charts! We do not object to this hilarious comedy.
No. 7: The Catch (ABC)
What It's About: The Killing's Mireille Enos plays a fraud investigator who falls victim to the biggest fraud of all.
Instant Reaction: Slick and sexy, we're into this. It's from Shonda Rhimes, so yes, we're on board from the start, but the trailer makes it look like we're one plot twist away from a Lifetime movie.
No. 6: Containment (The CW)
What It's About: From The Vampire Diaries and The Originals' Julie Plec, Containment centers on a deadly virus that hits Atlanta, leading the city to stage a massive quarantine, separating couples, families and friends.
Instant Reaction: This isn't your little sister's CW! It's easily the most adult show the network has ever done, and it looks epic. But then again, it's from the Plec-ville, so what did you expect?!
No. 5: Grandfathered (Fox)
What It's About: A comedy about coming of age–at any age. John Stamos stars as the ultimate bachelor whose life is turned upside down when he discovers he's not only a father, but a grandfather.
Instant Reaction: Absolutely hilarious, mixed with so many "awwwww" moments between Stamos and that adorable little girl to make us swoon. We could see Grandfathered becoming one of our new favorite comedies.
No. 4: The Family (ABC)
What It's About: What happens when your long lost son, presumed dead, returns 10 years later? A lot, apparently.
Instant Reaction: Joan Allen? Yes. Political drama? Yes. Mystery? Yes, yes.
No. 3: Scream Queens (Fox)
What It's About: A sorority is rocked by a series of murders. From Ryan Murphy, starring Emma Roberts, Lea Michele, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ariana Grande, Nick Jonas, Keke Palmer and so many more.
Instant Reaction: Ohhhh yes. We finally have a full-length trailer for this campy horror series, and it. Looks. Amazing! We are so in.
No. 2: Supergirl (CBS)
What It's About: Superman's cousin decides to start living up to her potential, using her powers for good.
Instant Reaction: YES. Yes yes yes! This is the female superhero we have been waiting for! Melissa Benoist is a STAR, and the special effects are insanely epic. Plus, that speech about why calling her "Supergirl" instead of "Superwoman" has us, once again, screaming "Yasssss!"
No. 1: DC's Legends of Tomorrow (The CW)
What It's About: All of your favorite heroes and baddies from Arrow and The Flash team up to save the world...and time itself.
Instant Reaction: It's Avengers meets Guardians of the Galaxy and it's epic. Bringing together the White Canary (a deceased assassin), Hawkgirl (a girl with wings and a past lives complex), a pair of criminals (Captain Cold and Heatwave!), Ray Palmer aka the Atom (a billionaire with more tech than he clearly knows what to do with) and Firestorm (half-a-hero, other-hald combustible), and a time-traveler (Rip Hunter!), Legends of Tomorrow is going to be the most daring, boldest and straight-up ballsiest show to ever hit network TV. This trailer is basically a four-minute chills fest. Fact: your chills will have chills. "In the future, you are not heroes. You're legends." COME ON. Give it to us NOW.
