The debate that inspired a thousand tweets has been put to rest...by you, the Grey's Anatomy fans.

After last week's much-debated episode of ABC's long-running medical drama that put Dr. Derek "McDreamy" Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) to rest, and jumped ahead a year in time, many viewers seemed to believe that the final moments of the episode in which Alex (Justin Chambers) brought Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) home from the hospital foreshadowed that the show was going there with the two BFFs.

Meredith's new "person" Alex never stopped calling her over the year in which she disappeared to live out her pregnancy alone, and never gave up on trying to find her. All that plus the fact that he rushed to her bedside when the hospital called him (he was her emergency contact) when she gave birth, seemed to plan the idea among some fans that Mer was ready to move on...with none other than Alex himself.

But is this the direction the show SHOULD go in? We here at E! Online debated it at length, and then asked you, the fans, to vote on whether it should happen.

So how do you feel about Meredith and Alex possibly being endgame for the show?

ABC

In a word: Nope. No. No, no, no, no, no.

According to our poll, a whopping 74.5% of you think that's the worst idea ever. So can we just call it now? Majority rules! These BFFs should stay platonic, and in fact, that's the reason a lot of fans are still watching. Many of your tweets and comments told us you love the idea that their friendship has never turned romantic, and you hope it stays that way. Though, of course, many others do still love the idea of Alex and Meredith, who clearly have shared more together now than pretty much anyone else on the show, taking it to the next level.

And fun fact: the reigning Grey's queen herself, Shonda Rhimes, favorited our Alex and Meredith post on Twitter....

So now, of course, we're wondering what THAT means. She must be considering putting Alex and Meredith together, right? Or she wouldn't have given the poll any attention? Or perhaps she just likes the fact that it's being debated? (We're totally charging ABC for the loss of work hours spent stressing/debating about all things Grey's in the past 10 days, by the way.)

Knowing Shonda Rhimes and her shows, of course, it's good to remember that anything can happen. If McDreamy can die (And we are still. Not. Over. It.), and the show can jump ahead a full year in one episode, all bets are off.

Grey's Anatomy airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on ABC.
